Muzaffar ALAM is a historian with specialization in medieval and early modern Indian history. He was Professor at the Centre for Historical Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, India, where he taught for over 30 years. In 2001 he joined as Professor the the University of Chicago, where he teaches South Asian history and culture at the Departments of South Asian Languages and Civilizations (SALC) and History.
His books and articles are considered to be a major contribution to the cultural and political history of pre-modern India. His focus lies with the political and cultural history of the Mughal Empire.
