The Company of Poets : Ethics and Poetry in the Great Book of Songs

This work focuses on the relationship between ethics and poetry in the Book of Songs by Abū l-Faraǧ al-Iṣfahānī (d. c. 360/970). This is a thematic study of the ethical-rhetorical conflicts related to the status of the poet and poetry, hypothesising that it is possible, based on them, to shed light on the status of al-Iṣfahānī's work in adab literature. The first part deals with the problem of the thematic unity of the work. Based on the identification and analysis of themes whose importance may have remained unnoticed until now, it postulates that one can speak of a universe of its own in the Kitāb al-Aġānī, which would be a world of the work as much as the work of a world. The second part focuses on the author's strategy in his defence of music (ġinā’), and in particular on the thematic consequences of music conceived as the supplement (tābiʿ) of the poem. It shows that the author is part of a tradition tending to justify music by the very thing that makes it condemnable in the eyes of its contemptuous, namely the power to subjugate the listener (fitnat al-ġinā'). The third part deals with various representations of poetry as poetry of bias, i.e. dedicated to affirmative force rather than representation. Starting from the hypothesis that poetry would be that discourse, in medieval Arabic culture, whose task is to make possible unaffirmable affirmations, the analysis follows its manifestations through the figure of the poet as unjust arbiter, the poet in love and his unaffirmable love, and finally the recourse to the threat of hiǧā'.
Ce travail porte sur les rapports entre éthique et poésie dans le Livre des chansons d’Abū l-Faraǧ al-Iṣfahānī (m. vers 360/970). Il s’agit d’une étude thématique des conflits éthico-rhétoriques liés aux statuts du poète et de la poésie, faisant l’hypothèse qu’il est possible, à partir d’eux, d’éclairer le statut de l’ouvrage d’al-Iṣfahānī dans la littérature d’adab. La première partie porte sur le problème de l’unité thématique de l’œuvre. À partir de l’identification et de l’analyse de thèmes dont l’importance a pu rester jusqu’ici inaperçue, elle postule que l’on peut parler d’un univers propre du Kitāb al-Aġānī, qui serait un monde de l’œuvre autant que l’œuvre d’un monde. La deuxième partie s’intéresse à la stratégie de l’auteur dans sa défense du chant, et en particulier aux conséquences thématiques du chant conçu comme le supplément (tābiʿ) du poème. Elle montre que l’auteur s’inscrit dans une tradition tendant à justifier la musique par cela même qui la rend condamnable aux yeux de ses contempteurs, à savoir le pouvoir de subjuguer l’auditeur (fitnat al-ġinā’). La troisième partie porte sur diverses représentations de la poésie comme poésie de parti pris, c'est-à-dire vouée à la force affirmative plutôt qu’à la représentation. À partir de l’hypothèse que la poésie serait ce discours, dans la culture arabe médiévale, ayant pour tâche de rendre possible des affirmations inaffirmables, l’analyse en suit les manifestations à travers la figure du poète comme arbitre injuste, du poète amoureux et de son inaffirmable amour, et enfin du recours à la menace du hiǧā’.
