L’fraja means entertainment in both Amazigh and Moroccan Arabic. However, the term l’hḍert (play) also conveys the same meaning with some important nuances. Both l’fraja and l’hḍert convey the existence of an Amazigh understanding of amusement. I argue that it is this distinctive musicality that endows Moroccan cinema with its Amazighity. Musicality links the current professionalized Amazigh cinema production to the erstwhile l’fraja in asāys (public stage) and connects the new media to the traditional l’hḍert. By investigating how notions of amusement, performance, and media interest in Moroccan Amazigh cinema, this presentation will expand the very notion of cinema, revealing the disjunctions as well as the continuities that exist between the cinematic medium and old forms of l’fraja in Morocco as they are manifested in the use and performance of music in Amazigh films.
