Antoine Clet was both the patented printer of the diocese and the town of Le Puy where he lived, and the author of three satirical plays, the first two of which are bilingual (Occitan/French): Le Sermon manqué, Monsieur Lambert, and Le Borgne. The plays constitute specimens of highly localised urban literature, which turns to the marginal space of manuscript to counteract the strong hold of the Jesuits, and the bishop Le Franc de Pompignan (a favourite target of Voltaire’s satire) on the town. In particular, these three plays, which we can follow through an interesting series of manuscripts conserved in the municipal library of Le Puy, trace an increasingly self-conscious literary path: as the texts affirm their social function, their bilingualism evolves, and Occitan becomes at once the most symbolically important language and an impossible language. Antoine Clet’s oeuvre offers a particularly fruitful starting point for consideration of bilingualism in literature, in which French and Occitan forever oppose and complete each other.
