A summary of what William Baxter (University of Michigan) and Laurent Sagart (EHESS, CRLAO) mean by Old Chinese, what evidence can be used to reconstruct it, our methodological assumptions, and a brief summary of the history of research on this topic. Middle Chinese pronunciation and our notation for it are also discussed.
